Working abroad as a model: visas, travel and what to expect
Placement with partner agencies can launch a career. Here is how international work is usually organised.
International placement is one of the fastest ways for a model to grow a book and a client list. It also involves paperwork, so preparation matters.
How placement works
Your mother agency introduces you to a partner agency in another market. If they want you, they offer a placement — a period (often 4–12 weeks) during which they book you for castings and jobs.
Visas
Requirements depend on your nationality and the destination. Some markets need a work visa sponsored by the local agency; others allow short stays for castings. Never travel for work on a tourist entry unless the agency confirms it is permitted.
Costs and advances
Flights, accommodation and portfolio costs are commonly advanced by the partner agency and deducted from earnings. Always ask for a written breakdown before you travel.
